Would be considered as products for financial gain?

by @ 10:31 pm on 03/01/2011. Filed under General

Would it be considered the use of products for profit?

I would like to participate in a contest.

The theme is the best shirt design World of Warcraft. Since it is difficult to get a good picture of what I want, I had to use a special program to do so.

The program is called WoW Model Viewer. Is a program that basically allows you to see the game models, pose them, etc.

The site does not have any “to use this product for personal or financial gain is illegal without the written consent of …” thing. Is semi-open source (available on request parts of the code, I think) and free.

Therefore, if it poses a model in which, then exporting to Photoshop and edited, would it be illegal? I understand that you can always contact the operator, but the deadline is soon, so I’m not sure I would get a response in time. Is this something I demand more if I use it and win? There is nothing in the rules of the contest to respecto.Además, I’m using Photoshop CS5 Student and Teacher Edition. I bought it at a discount of iD Tech Camps. I heard that the student and teacher edition follows the same “can not use this product for personal or financial …” thing. I know that if I bought the normal version at full price, I wish I could, but what about the student and teacher edition? I’m still a student, and I would be in a contest. I will not be used for industry or anything. Is this legal? I know I could ask to use, but I have the feeling (not so) strange to say that no.TL, DR “I can use free software and Photoshop Student Edition to enter (and win) a contest? I’d be doing all the work myself, “free software” only allows me to represent modelos.Gracias in advance, Chris

Thanks,
Chris Daugi

Question one – if you are able to manipulate the art work from one media to another so that it is not exact copy – you are ok! You just have to change a few colors – change the ears – whatever! As to whether you can use any CGI program – I’m sure that its written in the contest rules.

you should be fine, In fact if you won I bet the developer of the software would be thrilled if you told everybody you used his program to create it.

    Just don’t lie.

If the contest requires you to say what programs were used or if those running the contest ask you, just tell them. Odds are nobody will care which version of Photoshop or which freeware program you used.
